Editorial #8: Thanksgiving is More Than One Day

This is the time of year for reflection. Thanksgiving in 2013 is a big celebration with family and friends for many folk. However, we shouldn’t wait the entire year for one day to consider those things for which we should be extremely grateful every day of our lives.

NEWS FLASH — Thanksgiving is so much more than a single day. In its purest state, it’s gratitude for being able to get out of bed without help, think and speak in a complete, rational sentence, breathe without the assistance of artificial devices, and comprehend the depth and breadth of God’s love in our individual and collective lives.  Why on earth would any of that be reserved for only once a year?

An interesting post on Facebook by a prolific writer friend of mine said that sitting down to dinner for a Thanksgiving celebration is like sitting down to dinner with Hitler while denying the massacre; pass the gravy, please!  I will assume that the Native Americans of this country aren’t celebrating today. They have a totally legitimate reason not to do so.

I’ll take it further – does God reserve one day a year to provide oxygen? What about sunlight, wind and rain? Are those available only once a year? How about your heartbeat? Are any of those annual events? So, it stands to reason that we should give thanks on a daily basis, not annually. ‘Well, we do,’ you can say indignantly. Good! Keep doing it, you’ll be fine.

Let today be the day that you begin to see past the commercial side of holidays, and look at the goodness of the Lord in your life. After all, you’re still here. You don’t think that happened on your own power, do you?  Stay blessed!
